US Military’s Bullet Proof Vest
There are many types of US military body armor but specifically, we will discuss the Interceptor Body Armor or IBA which is the United States Army’s primary bullet proof vest. The new interceptor design replaced the older fragmentation protective body armor system which was introduced in the early 1980s. let us look back to when the body armor was invented.
The materials used for this kind of bullet proof vest were developed by DARPA in the 1990s and was produced and manufactured by another company catering to many persons in the military and army. The interceptor body armor system consists of an Outer Tactical Vest or OTV and two Small Arms Protective Inserts or SAPI ballistic plates. The OTV is a carrier shell and three main ballistic panels inserts (in the left and right side panels and a rear back panel) which are all made of finely woven Kevlar KM2 fiber.
This interceptor cannot be categorized as level III-A vest because military standard does not require protection against heave .44 Magnum ammunition however, both level III-A vests and this interceptor do protect from lighter 9mm threats in identical tests.
Due to the increasing dangers, a newer version of the vital plates and components have been developed. This has paved way for enhanced models of the US Military body armor.
Body armor is always been a two-way system. It has to have mobility and comfort. However these two are being sacrificed to achieve greater protection. This is a point of contention in the U.S. armed forces, with some favoring less armor in order to maintain mobility and others wanting as much protection as is practical.
Although the US Military Body Armor has been in controversy at the time of US President Bush, it is still being used until today but with enhancements due to improving technology.
